Our Summer Learning Camp is in full swing, so we figured we’d share some of the cool things campers have been doing these past couple of weeks! Kristen Hess of Attica Partners for Ag came in and did a lesson with our campers on the different layers of the Earth. Campers got to make their own edible replicas of the Earth’s crust, then eat it as a snack!

So many fantastic things going on this morning at our Summer Learning Camp! Each day, campers receive an hour of math instruction, an hour of English language arts instruction and an hour of some other enriching activity such as working on a STEAM project, going on a trip to the library or taking a swim lesson. Today, we welcomed Mr. John and Ms. Jackie from the Buffalo Zoo’s Zoomobile Program, who brought a hands-on learning experience to our District Auditorium. Campers learned about animal habitats across each of the 7 continents and some of the fascinating creatures that inhabit them! Mr. John and Ms. Jackie brought an elephant tooth, a wolf pelt, a giant squid beak and a whole bunch of other cool animal artifacts for our campers to look at and touch as well as a few live animals for campers to see up close. So cool! For anyone interested in taking a closer look at some of the animals and artifacts our campers were able to check out, head on over to our YouTube channel at the link below for a quick video from this morning's visit. Almost forgot to share these photos! Earlier this month, our sixth graders took a field trip to the Penn Dixie Fossil Park & Nature Reserve in Blasdell. The students had a great time, searching for different types of fossils and were even able to take the fossils home with them. Each class had a guide and went to 4 different stations to learn about different fossils that would be discovered there. (Photos courtesy of Allison Cali)

Our third graders headed to the Rochester Museum and Science Center earlier this month for a field trip. “The students had a fun-filled day exploring the museum, participating in the interactive exhibits, and observing a star show in the planetarium,” said 3rd Grade Teacher Cheryl Allein. The Attica Lions Club has named Matt Struzik as its Citizen of the Year for 2024! Struzik, an English teacher at Attica High School, was presented with the award at the Lions’ June 15 meeting. Outgoing Lions Club President Jeff Peters nominated Struzik for the award, citing his unsurpassed dedication to those in need which “often goes unnoticed by the general public” and especially his work as advisor of the We Care Club in the high school. “The club provides on average, 40 families in the Attica area a Thanksgiving meal. They provide non-perishable items as well as gift cards to Tops for turkeys so that families can have a fulfilling Thanksgiving - something that might not be available if it were not for him,” said Peters. “In addition to this, Matt and his club also spearhead a Christmas drive for children who are less fortunate. On average, they help about 45 families and 125 children, from infants to 18, each Christmas. Their busiest year, they helped 148 children.” This marks the second straight year one of our Attica faculty members has been recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Lions Club after Becki Peters received the honor in 2023. Hard NOT to be Blue Devils proud when you work with colleagues like these! Congratulations, Mr. Struzik! (Photo courtesy of Becki Peters)
