Our fourth graders had a great time on their field trip to Rochester last week.
First, students headed to Kodak Hall at Eastman Theater for a concert by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
The theme of the concert was "Going West," with selections centered on the California Gold Rush. Songs included "Mambo" from "West Side Story," the "Finale" of Rossini's "William Tell Overture" and "Horse and Buggy" by Leroy Anderson, among others.
The performance was part of the RPO’s education concert series and included images of student drawings and their dreams of the future.
Then, it was off to the Memorial Art Gallery where students were given a guided tour of the gallery’s collection of ancient, classical and contemporary art.
They even got the chance to take in Claude Monet’s “Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun,” one of a 41-painting series the French impressionist completed of London’s former Waterloo Bridge between 1900 and 1904 that is on permanent display at the MAG.

Our modified swim team’s last home meet of the season is tonight at 5 p.m. against Alexander, Oakfield-Alabama/Elba and Batavia/Notre Dame.

REMINDER: Superintendent Dr. Kiel Illg and Assistant Superintendent of Business & Operations Meaghan Matuszak will be giving a presentation on our proposed capital project at tomorrow night’s Attica Village Board Meeting.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Attica Municipal Building, 9 Water St., Attica.
There will also be an opportunity for questions after the presentation.

Attica’s National Honor Society chapter welcomed 20 new members during an induction ceremony in our Performing Arts Center last week.
Our chapter officers spoke on the four National Honor Society pillars - character, scholarship, leadership and service - before new members were welcomed into the chapter and administered their oath.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors are invited to apply for membership in the society if they’ve achieved a cumulative grade point average of 90 percent at the close of the second quarter prior to the invitation period.
Invited students then sit for an interview with the chapter’s five-member faculty advisory committee, which ultimately votes on what new members to accept.
Students inducted into the district’s NHS chapter were Alyssa Armstrong, Robert Beck, Elle Brydalski, Madelyn Burger, Samuel Dunlap, Alyssa George, Beau Hyman, Anna Martino, Kristen Miller, Dylan Mirrione, Julie Pawlak, Rachel Rickettson, Nolan Rzepka, Vanessa Schlau, Avery Schmidbauer, Amelia Signor, Erin Snyder, Boden Spink, Abigail Wilkinson and Addyson Zawilski.

How cool is this? Members of our High School Youth Empowerment Club recently made a Take What You Need Wall in one of our hallways!
The idea, said club member Alanna Pellicane, is to spread positivity to anyone who might need it.
“There are cards with different positive and inspiring messages on them,” Alanna explained, “ and students can take the one that applies to them. Students can then put them in their phone, lockers or chromebooks and have a positive message to glance at throughout the day whenever they need to.”

Our fourth graders have been working hard researching national parks and weather phenomena as part of their most recent units in social studies and science.
Students then drew on both areas of knowledge to create a weather report for their chosen park and, in collaboration with Genesee Valley BOCES, recorded that report using a camera and greennscreen.
Students presented their recorded reports during our Fourth Grade Family Night earlier this month - it was a huge success!
Students walked away with research and presentation skills after completing both units.

Family ID will be open on Friday, March 15 at 6 AM to sign your student athlete up for all modified spring sports. Students must have an updated physical on file with the nurse to participate. The first day of practice will start on Monday, April 15. Students are encouraged to communicate with their coach on the practice site.
Our Strategic Planning Committee assembled in the High School Library today for a workshop facilitated by Michael Cornell.
Cornell, superintendent of the Hamburg Central School District, is also a consultant who specializes in helping districts navigate the strategic planning process.
Our committee, which includes administrators, teachers, staff, Board of Education members, students and parents, is working to create a strategic plan for Attica Central Schools.
Once complete, this plan will function as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines our vision, mission, core values and actions for the coming years and help us navigate the evolving landscape of education while remaining committed to our aspirations for the District.
We had a great turnout at our union trades career fair earlier this week in the High School Library.
More than 40 students came out to hear from local construction workers, bricklayers, electricians and other skilled tradespeople about how they got into their profession, the types of work they usually do and some of the benefits of union membership like higher wages, regular raises, comprehensive health insurance coverage and pensions.

Attica Superintendent Dr. Kiel Illg traveled to Albany yesterday along with Pembroke Superintendent Matt Calderon, Pavilion Superintendent Kate Hoffman, Letchworth Superintendent Todd Cambell, Elba Superintendent Gretchen Rosales and Wyoming Superintendent Emily Herman to meet with lawmakers and continue his advocacy efforts for equitable school funding.
If Governor Kathy Hochul’s executive budget proposal becomes law, Attica Central Schools alone would lose about $540,000 of foundation aid funding for the 2024-2025 school year.
While in Albany, Illg met our local state representatives, Sen. George Borrello and Assemblymembers David DiPietro and Steven Hawley, as well as Sen. Shelley Mayer of Westchester County, who chairs the State Senate’s Committee on Education, and staff member from Assemblymember Michael Benedetto’s office. Benedetto, who represents parts of The Bronx, chairs the Committee on Education in the State Assembly.
It’s National Read Across America Week and this year, Attica Elementary School is doing something a little different.
Inspired by the hit, Fox reality show, “The Masked Singer,” we’ve decided to stage “The Masked Reader” as a way of getting our kiddos excited about reading!
For the next four days, we’ll be sharing a video of one of our Masked Readers reading a book aloud. These readers could be ANYONE - a teacher, a staff member, a coach - with a connection to our school!
Students will watch these videos in class and then, during our monthly assembly Friday morning, will have a chance to guess readers’ identities before they reveal themselves!
We hope you’ll follow along with us this week and please feel free to share your guesses with us online!
Our first Masked Reader video drops this afternoon, so keep your eyes peeled!
Each year, the Arts Council for Wyoming County hosts an All High School Art show during Art in our Schools Month.
This is a highly selective show as only 10 students are selected from each Wyoming County High School, so to be chosen is a big deal.
Major congratulations are therefore in order to Attica Central Schools’ own Isabel Lahti, Alyssa Elmore, Ethan Tober, Evenecel Carrion, Brooke Laird, Corrin Orlowski, Emily Martino, Olivia Koch, Carson Kilian, and Evelyn Walthew for being selected by Ms. Laura Steves this year’s show!
The show opened today and runs through March 30 at the WYCO Arts Council Gallery, 31 South Main St., Perry. The gallery is open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A show reception will be held Friday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m.

The Attica Elementary Olympics are in full swing down on Prospect Street!
Elementary school teachers and staff came up with the idea of doing an olympics competition as a way to get our students excited about engaging in positive behaviors.
We have four teams competing. Each team consists of one kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade classroom.
Team earns medals for completing an act that aligns with a positive character trait for that month. At the end of the school year, the team with the most medals will be declared the winner!
For our February character trait, kindness, the Red Team, which consists of Mrs. Hertel’s, Mrs. Fagan’s, Mrs. Calkins’, Miss Kocher’s, and Mrs. Kennedy’s classes, showed kindness by visiting other classrooms to share kind words and compliments.
Members of the Red Team practiced how to “fill someone else’s bucket” to put a smile on a friend’s face!
Red Team members then saw that acts of kindness and this feeling of happiness “fill our own buckets” too!
Great job, Red Team, on earning another medal for being kind!
